In this individual exercise, we began our design explorations at the scale of the chair. Using the Thonet Chair as a reference, the chair designs explored notions of sitting, comfort, utility, and playfulness. The exploration of education design continued with the development of a classroom that would allow for learning, inclusion and play. The easy arrangement of furniture allows for the alteration of the classroom to fit the needs of engaged learning. In a pedagogical concept of the school with no walls, an open classroom transforms during the day, starting with the learning circle, going into the group lesson, open play space, and ends with the collaborative learning arrangement. The line enters the classroom as a track system that the classrooms use as a modifier of furniture throughout the class transformations and also used for the decentralized library. In a further exploration of equitable and collaborative learning, the classroom is able to expand and contract based on enrollment needs. This also allows different levels of education to interact with each other throughout school. The library is decentralized and learning materials circulate throughout the school on a track system.&nbsp; The central plaza of Diamond Ranch High School extends into the Elementary school by a roof top circulation system of paths, gardens, learning and play spaces. the needs of indigenous communities residing in food desert areas of the southwest. The greenhouse provides year round growing conditions for indigenous traditional foods of corn, beans, and squash. At one end of the facility is an environmentally separated volume of offices, educational, and research spaces. A sorting, packaging, and distribution center operates the entire ground floor. Like the folly curved class is the primary facade system that provides access to sunlight but also acts as a scupper system to collect water for use within the greenhouse. The primary research objective is to develop alternative methods of constructing complex steel projects without the use specialized steel bending machine technologies. A portion of my generated design was selected for the base geometry and steel design, followed by the incorporation of ceramic tiles. The digital model served as a real time guide, accessed with hololens that aided the steel bending, welding and ceramic fabrication. App Development In addition to the design and fabrication research, an interactive AR app was developed so that others could access the fabrication research methods to construction the design on their own. Contextual and Navajo cultural conditions helped drive the design of the senior center into an architecture that is new while preserving familiar elements of Navajo design. The Senior Center design takes advantage of spectacular views of the surrounding red cliffs to the north and community below. The main space is the large dining room with panoramic windows&nbsp; to the west and north elevations of the building. A large patterned screen of perforated metal covers the west and north elevation to reduce solar heat gain from the west but also to create a dynamic tribute to Corn, a vital commodity used in Navajo ceremony and cuisine. The dining room features a high ceiling with large wood beams and tongue in groove decking as a symbolic gesture to the magnificent log structures of traditional Navajo homes. A fireplace is located in the center of the building with program placed around it, an important space in traditional Navajo spaces. Other program elements include two activity rooms, a commercial kitchen, restrooms with showers, and a single office. As an intern I worked on this project in programming, schematic design, design development, construction documents, and construction administration phases. As a designer I developed the conceptual framework and patterning of the exterior screen. Located in Dubai, Opus is a mixed-use tower containing a luxury hotel, offices, conference rooms, restaurants, spa, and luxury apartments. The design resembles an Ice Cube with a melted central void. The design vision was achieved through two concrete towers connected at the base and upper floors with steel construction. Glass is used as the primary cladding material with typical glazing system used for the perimeter facades and an articulated system of cold form, hot-formed, and flat glazing for the central void. After understanding the structural and facade systems of Opus, we explored the application of an entirely different facade system to the Opus project while retaining the structural system and larger architectural form. The Uppsala Concert hall facade system was selected as the material and tectonic system that would be applied to Opus. The Uppsala Concert Hall is located in Uppsala, Sweden and was designed by Henning Larson Architects. The concert hall is cladded with an Aluminum panel board system that creates a striking facade articulation of alternating patterns. A rapid analysis of the concert hall led to the understanding of it’s material and tectonic construction to be applied to Opus. In a generative method of form making and conceptual development, the bold works and narratives of artist Kara Walker sets the foundation for project manifestation. The exploration results in a mask that opposes traditional notions of symmetrical beauty in an asymmetrical composition that emboldens it’s evocative characteristics. Warriors Mask Native American’s have long used masking in everyday life, healing, war, and a way to communicate with the divine. In our research and understanding of masking in Native American cultures we’ve identified three major masking elements: Masking close to the body with paints, animal hides, and textiles.Using animorphing techniquesImplementing a Crown in the form of feathers, geometric objects, or other natural structures. These elements were used to create a warrior’s mask. The leather like materials that make the base of the mask represent the ferocity of animals. The antlers and jaw bone represent power and courage. And the feather crown represents agility and strength. The mask is used to transform the wearer into warrior, embodied with courage and strength.
